Neurological Rehabilitation

A specialisation of Physiotherapy that aims to effectively manage neurological conditions

Neurological illnesses and their symptoms can range from mild to often life-changing and can be a difficult adjustment for the sufferer and their families. Neurological rehabilitation is a specialisation of Physiotherapy that aims to effectively manage neurological conditions.

Physiotherapists are trained to help with these conditions whether they are of sudden onset such as a stroke or gradual and progressive such as Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s Disease. Our goal is to improve each patient’s function and overall independence and quality of life. This is often done in conjunction with a team of health professionals.

On initial assessment a full appraisal of the patient’s mobility, strength, balance and gait are completed. A list of goals is devised in partnership with each patient. An individualised management programme is prescribed specifically to each patient’s needs and goals.

Conditions include:

  • Stroke
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Brian Injuries to include post-concussion syndrome

Treatments consist of:

  • Specific muscle strengthening
  • Mobility and balance training
  • Manual techniques
  • Gait re-education to include walking aid prescription
  • Advice on lifestyle

These aim to reduce disability and allow the acquisition of new skills and strategies that promote independence in all aspects of daily life. Claire at West Limerick Physiotherapy clinic has completed post graduate studies specifically on the area of Neurological Rehabilitation and this along with 20 years of clinical experience enable her to assess and treat these conditions with great results obtained.
