Feeling Dizzy - Vestibular Disorder

Occasional dizziness is normal and very common, however dizziness caused by a vestibular disorder effects more than a third of people at some time in their lives!

Symptoms of a Vestibular Disorder

  • Vertigo: feeling that your environment is moving
  • Unsteadiness or imbalance
  • Light headedness
  • Difficulty Concentrating
  • Vision Disturbance
  • Hearing Changes
  • Tinnitus: hearing a ringing in your ears

Diagnosing the Cause of Your Dizziness

At West Limerick Physiotherapy Clinic, our vestibular expert, Claire, uses specialised tests to assess vestibular function:

  • Video Frenzel goggles and computer software
  • Balance assessment
  • Assessment of Eye-Head Co-ordination
  • Gait analysis (walking function)

Your diagnosis may be one of the following:

  • Vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis
  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo
  • Meniere’s Disease
  • Dizziness coming from the neck region

Treatment – Vestibular Rehabilitation

This is tailored to each individual and includes:

  • Exercises to improve balance
  • Exercises to improve your Gaze Stability
  • Gait re-education
  • Treatment of the neck region
  • Treatment of your tinnitus
  • General strength and conditioning
